TransEpidermal Water Loss (TEWL). Penurunan TEWL membantu menjaga fungsi
baik.

ABSTRACT
Ashitaba herb extract has been reported to exhibit antibacterial activity
against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as the
ability to reduce TransEpidermal Water Loss (TEWL). The reduction of TEWL
helps maintain the skin barrier function and hydration, thereby lowering the risk of
acne vulgaris exacerbation. To support these effects, a sheet mask formulation was
developed to enhance skin hydration through the Occlusive Dressing Treatment
(ODT) mechanism. The combination of ashitaba extract?s ability to reduce TEWL
and the hydrating effect of the sheet mask is expected to provide a synergistic effect
as a supportive care alternative for acne vulgaris. This study aimed to develop an
optimum formulation of ashitaba herb extract sheet mask with desirable physical
characteristics. Optimization was carried out using the Simplex Lattice Design
(SLD) method by varying the concentrations of glycerin and propylene glycol as
humectants, which influence pH and viscosity. The optimum formula was obtained
at 12.5% glycerin and 5% propylene glycol. The resulting formulation was
greenish-brown in color, soft, thin, elastic, rose-scented, and homogeneous without
coarse particles. It showed a pH of 5.04 ? 0.02, viscosity of 406.6 ? 19.6 cP, and
absorption capacity of 83.17 ? 2.52%. Hedonic testing with 20 respondents
indicated good acceptability: 83.75% (color), 85.00% (aroma), and 91.25%
(texture). Therefore, the optimized sheet mask meets the required standards and
demonstrates good physical properties.
